Benqi lending and staking positions from entry to exit
Benqi combines lending markets with liquid staking, which turns staked AVAX into transferable sAVAX on Avalanche. Supplying assets earns variable interest; borrowing creates debt against eligible collateral. Liquid staking creates a token that represents a share of pooled AVAX and staking rewards. Each position has different exit conditions, so the balance shown after entry matters as much as the original deposit. Available liquidity, outstanding debt and redemption timing determine when assets can return to a wallet.

Supplied assets and staking shares
Lending and liquid staking put deposited assets to different uses. Lending pools make supplied assets available to borrowers, who pay interest. Liquid staking delegates AVAX to Avalanche validators and issues sAVAX to represent the staked position. These mechanisms explain both the earnings and the constraints: lending needs available pool liquidity for withdrawals, while staking redemption must accommodate the underlying delegation process.
Borrowing adds a separate obligation to a supplied position. Eligible collateral supports the loan, and the outstanding debt grows as interest accrues. Supplying alone does not require borrowing. Likewise, holding sAVAX does not create a loan, although depositing it as collateral and borrowing against it adds lending obligations to the staking exposure.
Follow a position through entry and exit
For a position that must eventually return to a spendable wallet balance, compare lending and staking on the same basis: what permits release. The table follows their normal progression without assuming a fixed return or an immediate exit.
| Stage | Operation | Observable position | Required starting state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Supply an accepted asset or stake AVAX | A supplied balance or newly received sAVAX | An accepted asset on Avalanche C-Chain and spendable AVAX for transaction fees |
| Active position | Keep the deposit or staking shares; borrow only if intended | Underlying asset entitlement and any separate debt | Eligible collateral and available liquidity for borrowing |
| Exit preparation | Reduce debt that restricts withdrawal or request staking redemption | Lower debt or an outstanding unstaking request | Repayment assets or available sAVAX for the request |
| Release | Withdraw supplied assets or claim redeemable AVAX | A wallet receipt and reduced or closed position | Sufficient pool liquidity and collateral headroom, or an active redemption window |
A normal lending withdrawal can proceed when liquidity and collateral conditions permit it. A liquidity shortage calls for a smaller available withdrawal or waiting for liquidity to return. An expired staking claim requires recovery of the overdue shares before a fresh redemption request. Neither condition calls for repeating the original deposit.
Which balance shows what you own?
The supplied position or staking share balance shows your claim on deposited assets; the spendable wallet balance shows assets outside that position. A dashboard may also show borrowed assets, accrued incentives and a combined valuation. These numbers describe different things and should remain separate in a position record.
In Core Markets, receipt tokens represent supplied assets through an exchange rate. With sAVAX, staking rewards increase the AVAX represented by the shares rather than requiring a growing token count. A stable receipt-token balance therefore does not establish that earnings have stopped. The underlying asset entitlement provides the useful comparison with the original deposit.
A wallet transfer, a new deposit and an increase in asset price can all change displayed value. None alone measures earned interest.
Interest, incentives and borrowing costs
Interest and incentive rewards come from different mechanisms, even when a dashboard combines them into a net yield figure.
Supply interest and debt accrual
Market utilization connects borrowing demand to interest rates. As more of an asset pool becomes borrowed, its interest model can increase borrowing costs. Supply earnings also reflect the portion of borrower interest that the protocol retains as reserves. Entry rates therefore do not fix earnings or debt costs for the entire holding period.
Separately claimable rewards
Incentive rewards appear separately from supplied assets and borrowed balances. Their token value can change independently of the deposit. A combined annualized figure does not establish how much underlying asset a withdrawal will return, or how much debt repayment requires. Record the reward amount separately from the principal and accrued interest.
Collateral headroom changes while debt remains open
A borrowing position needs enough eligible collateral to support its outstanding debt. Falling collateral prices, rising debt-asset prices and accumulated interest can reduce that margin without another transaction from the borrower.
A collateralized position becomes eligible for liquidation when its Health falls below 1. Liquidators repay debt and receive collateral under the applicable liquidation rules. The close factor limits repayment within an individual liquidation, while the liquidation incentive affects the collateral taken. These parameters do not establish a permanent cap on total losses across repeated liquidations.
Repayment reduces the debt obligation; additional eligible collateral increases its backing. Withdrawing collateral moves the position in the opposite direction. The available borrowing limit expresses a protocol boundary, and using all available capacity leaves little room for adverse changes.
Can supplied assets be withdrawn immediately?
Supplied assets can be withdrawn when the market has sufficient available liquidity and the withdrawal leaves any borrowing position adequately collateralized. Lending withdrawals do not use the liquid staking cooldown.
The pool may have lent out much of the supplied asset. A positive supplied balance still represents a claim, but it does not mean the entire amount sits unused in the contract. Borrower repayments and new deposits can restore available liquidity. Separately, collateral restrictions can block a withdrawal even when the pool has cash. These conditions require different responses.
sAVAX redemption and market liquidity
Liquid staking has two exit mechanisms: protocol redemption and a sale into available market liquidity. They differ in timing and the basis of the AVAX received.
Protocol redemption
An unstaking request transfers the requested sAVAX into contract custody and starts a cooldown, followed by a limited redemption window. Rewards accrue through the cooldown; the redeemable amount does not continue earning during that final window. The cooldown and window are adjustable parameters, so the request's claimability and deadline govern the actual exit. A claimable balance still requires a claim transaction.
Sale through a liquidity pool
A market sale exchanges available sAVAX at the executable market price. It avoids waiting for protocol redemption, but pool liquidity, price impact and trading fees determine the proceeds. The market quote can differ from the protocol's AVAX backing per share. Comparing both routes requires the same sAVAX amount and a distinction between immediately executable proceeds and a later redemption entitlement.
What can interrupt an exit?
Insufficient lending liquidity, collateral restrictions, an inactive redemption window or a protocol pause can prevent an exit from completing.
Emergency controls can restrict markets, staking or redemption. A pause can therefore delay access even when a position otherwise meets its financial requirements.
Liquid staking also relies on infrastructure that moves AVAX between Avalanche chains. Multi-party computation distributes signing authority among participating nodes. If too few nodes remain available to meet the signing threshold, cross-chain operations can stop. A compromise of that threshold creates a different risk: unauthorized transfers.
Upgradeable contracts and administrative parameter changes can alter position handling. Audits examine defined code and assumptions; they do not prevent compromised signing authority or eliminate operational failures. An expected redemption date cannot override a paused operation.
Core and isolated lending markets
Core Markets and Avalanche Ecosystem Markets apply different borrowing scopes. Core Markets support borrowing among their available assets. Avalanche Ecosystem Markets separate collateral pools and restrict borrowing to USDC, with risk parameters specific to each market.
That separation affects which deposit supports which debt. An asset balance elsewhere in the suite does not automatically provide collateral for a selected isolated market. Market isolation contains particular exposures, but it does not remove the supplied asset's price risk or shared infrastructure dependencies. A combined dashboard value should therefore accompany, rather than replace, each market's position details.
QI, node voting and validator services
The wider suite includes QI staking and validator services, which create obligations and records separate from lending or sAVAX holdings.
QI staking and voting power
Staking QI accumulates Benqi Miles, previously called veQI. Node Voting uses those Miles to influence delegation from the Miles pool to eligible Avalanche validators. Voting support affects allocation chances rather than establishing a fixed delegation entitlement. This is a different exposure from holding sAVAX, whose value reflects pooled AVAX and staking rewards.
Ignite validator participation
Ignite supports Avalanche validator participation through payment and staking options that reduce the participant's direct validator funding requirement. Validator identity, the selected participation period and applicable hosting arrangements matter to that position. Its registration and completion conditions belong to the validator service; a lending withdrawal or sAVAX redemption does not close it.
Reconcile the completed position
A completed exit needs both the asset receipt and the corresponding position change. For lending, the relevant records include remaining supplied assets and outstanding debt. For staking, they include remaining shares and any outstanding redemption requests. Separately claimable rewards may remain after the principal position changes.
Keep quantities in their original asset units before comparing currency valuations. Price movement can obscure the difference between earnings and market gains. Transaction fees also explain part of the change in a wallet's native asset balance. Reconciliation establishes what moved and what remains; it cannot turn an unfinished claim or remaining debt into a closed position.
Questions and answers about Benqi
-
Do I need AVAX for transactions when supplying another token?
- Transactions on Avalanche C-Chain require AVAX for network fees, including contract interactions involving other tokens. The charge depends on gas consumption and network fee conditions. A balance held entirely in a supplied asset or sAVAX does not provide spendable native AVAX for a transaction.
-
Can an unexpired sAVAX unstaking request be cancelled?
- The staking contract supports cancelling an unexpired unlock request and returning its shares, subject to the contract's operational controls. Cancellation removes that request rather than completing an AVAX redemption. Expired requests use a separate overdue-share recovery operation, so the request's status determines which operation applies.
-
Are QI tokens the same as lending receipt tokens?
- QI and lending receipt tokens represent different holdings. QI has its own staking and voting-related uses. A market receipt token represents a supplied position in its underlying asset, including a separate receipt token for supplied QI. Similar lettering does not make those tokens interchangeable.
-
How does unstaking QI affect accumulated Miles?
- Unstaking any amount of QI resets the accumulated Miles balance to zero under the described QI staking mechanism. A partial QI withdrawal therefore has a consequence beyond reducing the staked token amount: it also removes accumulated voting power. This rule concerns QI staking, not sAVAX redemption.
-
Will borrowing positions remain private to the connected wallet?
- Borrowing positions are recorded through public blockchain contracts and are not visible only to the connected wallet. Transaction records and contract data can reveal account activity and positions. A wallet address may be pseudonymous, but that does not make its lending transactions confidential.
